“Meanwhile, the majestic Penthesilea is graceful. She balanced the proportions, took care of a positive impression. She brushed her teeth, combed her eyelashes, donned a clean chain mail. Only then did she pass the disc to us so that we could listen to her. The first track, “Memory Corners,” strikes with the verve and momentum typical of Deep Purple’s recent work, only to show its more subtle side in the third minute, when a guitar solo gradually introduces a crazy space, within which individual instruments break away to lively improvisation. The second track, “Stranded,” combines heavy guitar riffs with dynamic keyboard parts, but also delights with an atmospheric slowdown in the middle part. Probably no acoustic intro could manage to introduce metalheads to the discussed world. On the contrary, metalheads need a dynamic ride to welcome them, to immediately feel at home, and only then listen to more experimental motifs. “Spectral Regrowth” adopted a similar convention: first an aggressive groove, then a Jeff Beck-like fusion, but then a return to metal impact with instrumental flourish. “Stains” is already progressive in its entirety, but to counterbalance the first half of “Give Them Space” was turned up to a hundred; It reminds me of Icelandic Ring Of Gyges, where they are obsessed with Haken. I am not sure if the second half of “Give Them Space” should not be separated as a separate track, because it is completely different and there is no smooth transition between them. Among the calmer parts I like the most is probably “The Psychopathology Of Everyday Things” with all those amazing keyboards, although there is also no shortage of a distinctive guitar riff and decisive drum hits.”
